The Westman Islands

Experience

The Westman Islands

Puffins & puffins & puffins & history

This tour is packed with exciting options

Imagine an island just off the coast of Iceland. Visualise millions of puffins working relentlessly on feeding the younglings in the nest at the top of the bird cliffs. Imagine how it must have felt to wake up in the middle of the night realising that your backyard was literally on fire. The small town in Heimaey, the largest of the Westman islands, was awaken to the news of a volcanic eruption in the island’s thought to be dormant volcano, Eldfell, in 1973. Let’s go and visit this island, see the puffins and eat good food together. We will also learn about the island’s history of course by visiting a few museums.

Truly, a wonderful and packed day of knowledge, good humor, good food, excellent company and magnificent landscape!

Description:

We depart Reykjavik early morning and head east. Our destination is the ferry port that was conveniently built on sand on the south coast. From there we are forced to take an excruciatingly long ferry ride over to Heimaey island, where we will spend a few hours together exploring the island. There is an amazing museum, Eldheimar, that is built around a house that was dug out of the ash. We will visit that and hear the story about the night of the eruption. There is also a museum about the history of the islands, which is very interesting to visit. And of course the Beluga sanctuary.
